Topic of Conversation: What about Pluto?
The demotion of Pluto from planetary status in 2006 caused worldwide frustration, anger, and disdain toward the International Astronomical Union (IAU) who voted to demote Pluto’s planetary status. Perhaps you remember where you were when you heard the news that Pluto was no longer a planet in our solar system. Do you remember your reaction?
Did you know that Pluto’s planetary status continues to come back up for debate?
Here are the steps you will need to take to complete this conversation:

What was your initial reaction when you heard the news that Pluto was no longer a planet? Are there any other cosmic objects that you feel strongly about?
Science is an ever changing field as our knowledge continues to expand. Does this surprise you? Are there any other scientific discoveries or events that help you to recognize this tentative nature of science?
The list of dwarf planets (now the dominant category of our solar system) continues to grow. Should we again change the definition of a planet? What do you think should be considered for an object to be classified as a planet?
