1. Individual Course Plan – Due: Wednesday, October 16th

Purpose: This is a chance for you to reflect on all the readings, videos, and class discussions we’ve had about education and learning, and to think about how the views expressed by these authors and speakers align with the philosophy and goals of the University Studies’ FRINQ program and with this class, in particular. More importantly, it is a chance for you to reflect on your own education and your own strengths and weaknesses as a student, in order to identify and articulate your personal learning goals for this term. This piece of writing will be something that you can use at the end of the term to help you determine what grade you should give yourself. It will also help me, because by understanding your individual learning goals and your plan for achieving them, I will gain insight into how to structure assignments and class sessions to help you learn.

Format: Typed, double-spaced, 12-point font

Style: This is a personal reflection about your learning goals and your plan for achieving them, so you should feel free to use your natural voice and “I” language for this assignment.

Much like Cronon’s piece, you will begin with an essay format and then create a list. The first 2-3 paragraphs should address your understanding of what it means to “claim an education,” based upon all the readings, videos, and discussions you’ve engaged with thus far. You should then consider where you stand in relation to these ideas about higher education and active learning. For instance:

· Are these new ideas for you? Do you find these ideas exciting? Challenging? Terrifying?

· How do the ideas expressed in these materials align with your own ideas about your role as a student? In what ways do you see yourself and your philosophy about learning reflected in these writing? In what ways do these readings challenge or alter your view of education and of what it means to be a student?

· In what ways do you feel you have been an active participant in your own learning? In what ways have you been passive?

· In what ways will you need to alter your mindset in order to “claim your education?” What specific aspects of active learning come easily to you? What aspects are more difficult?

Once you have reflected upon and articulated these ideas, you will come up with a list of learning goals for yourself, along with a brief explanation of how you plan to achieve them. Some things to consider:

· Do you have a tendency to be judgmental or resistant when things are uncomfortable? Is that something you can overcome? Can you go with the flow even if you feel the urge to disrupt it?

· Do you get easily distracted? Are you a good listener?

· How are you with group work? Do you work well in a team, or do you prefer individual work?

· Are there stories you’ve told yourself about who you are as a student that you might be willing to let go of? Are you open to the possibility that you might discover strengths and talents that you never had?

· Do you have strongly held opinions? Are you comfortable expressing them? Are you comfortable hearing other people express opinions that run counter to yours? Are you open to changing your mind?

· When you read do you look up unfamiliar words? Do you read assigned texts more than once? Do you think you can push yourself to do so?

· How are you with time management? How do you deal with stress and anxiety? What will you do to take care of your emotional and physical well-being?

· Do you participate in class discussions? Do you second guess yourself and stay silent, rather than say what you’re thinking? Are you willing to take some risks this term?

· In what ways do you hope to contribute to the “we” mentality of this class? How can you be a fully invested member of this learning community and support others in their learning, as well?

· What grade do you intend to earn in this course?

· In what ways will you commit yourself to earning your desired grade? Will you take advantage of the resources available to you? For instance, if you want to develop your writing skills, will you visit the Writing Center? Will you find a friend to help you edit papers, or come to office hours to meet with me?

· What concerns do you have about this course? How might Panna and I support your learning?

Please consider most of these questions as you create your list, and be as specific and concrete as you can as you articulate your goals and your plan for achieving them.

2. Read and Annotate (“Golden Lines” and margin notes):

· Sun Magazine interview with Anne Hallward.

· The Misfit’sManifesto, by Lidia Yuknavich (local author). You’ll be reading the introduction and a section from Chapter Two.

These are dense readings and you will need to read them twice – especially the Hallward interview. We will be discussing both readings in depth on Wednesday, October 16th, however, we may also discuss them a bit on Monday, the 14th, so please do your first reading before then. There are vocabulary words and concepts that will be unfamiliar to you, and the ideas expressed in both pieces take some time to absorb. So, please make time to deeply engage with these readings, as I think doing so will lead to a really rich class discussion next week.
