This discussion addresses the following outcomes:
Analyze the society and culture that pirates created after 1715 and how it contrasts to non-pirate society (CO#4)
Discuss the values and responsibilities of people who joined the pirates and consequences for violating the pirate code (CO#4).
As we discussed last week, the pirates of the Golden Age came from many different backgrounds. These pirates banded together and constructed a rather well-structured society based on a set of rules and regulations stipulated in a code for all ships. This discussion will examine these codes of conduct as well as their distribution of justice.
In preparation for our discussion, be sure you have read the Modules Notes, Chapters 4 and 5 in Rediker, and the Articles of Bartholomew Roberts. Based on your readings, consider the following in a post of at least 250 words:
Why did pirates create codes of conduct onboard vessels? How did these codes of conduct fit with their distribution of justice and revenge?
In your opinion, what was the most important factor shaping pirate expectations of group behavior?
What does this pirate code tell us about pirate society, particularly in comparison to the worlds they had come from?
Then, over the course of the week, reply to at least two others and discuss how the factors mentioned in your initial responses shaped the consequences for those who “crossed” them.
