Mixed martial arts (MMA) in one of the fastest growing sports, experiencing success on an international level led by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Mixed martial arts is a full contact combat sport that combines techniques from several different disciplines utilizing both striking and grappling from various positions. For ages, there have been questions of which martial art or style of fighting is superior, but in the 1990’s the Ultimate Fighting Championship became established to answer that question. The original premise was to pit masters of one style against masters of another; for example, how would a black belt in Karate fair against a wrestling champion? Though there were a few ground rules, they were not many in the original bare-knuckle contest and no weight classes pitting fighters with opponents almost twice their size. The UFC has come a long way since then to legitimatize itself and has adopted several rules and structures.

Originally, fighters used to focus on one style but this made them one-dimensional and they soon realized that to be great they had to diversify. Nowadays, fighters are not training in kickboxing or wrestling, but train in MMA that takes the most effective techniques from various styles and combines them in a way that is best suited to the sport. Different schools and trainers use different combinations of martial arts to create their distinctive style of fighters. The three most vital and popular styles that a well-rounded mixed martial artist needs to focus on are kickboxing, wrestling and jiu-jitsu. All the fights start on the feet so it is imperative that fighters must have good knowledge of kickboxing, which utilizes various techniques such as kicking, punching, elbow strikes and knee strikes that can be used offensively in attacking their opponent, or defensively in keeping their opponents at a distance. Wrestling is the most important of the disciplines as fighters with a good wrestling base usually dictate the pace and location of the fight as they can take the fight down to the ground at any time or tie up their opponent in a clinch or against the fence. This neutralizes the kickboxing skills of their opponent and can also be used to wear an opponent down since they have to deal with the weight of the wrestler. Having a good wrestling base also allows a good striker to defend the takedown and keep the fight standing where they have an advantage. Jiu-jitsu, which originated in Brazil, is the most famous as it emphasizes good technique and leverage over strength size, allowing much smaller individuals to control larger opponents. It can be used aggressively to take down opponents and use techniques like rear naked choke, arm and leg locks to submit an opponent, or defensively in protecting a fighter from submissions. Besides, it can be used to perform submissions from the back or sweeping the opponent so as to get back into the top position.

The sport has evolved and come a long way in an attempt to legitimize itself from its original bare knuckle and no rules battles. It follows the Unified Mixed martial arts rules with its chief priority being to protect the fighters. It is not a free for all, there are basic rules such as no biting, eye-gouging, groin attacks among others and fighters are deducted points or disqualified for offenses. It takes place in a wire cage with an octagon shape as opposed to a boxing ring which had issues of fighters getting tangled up and slipping through the ropes, which caused a halt in the action and fighters had to be reset. Before being granted a license to fight, all fighters must pass stringent drug testing before and after the fight. Besides a doctor’s physical examination is carried out prior to the provision of a fighting license. All fighters must wear approved clothing, which is usually limited to shorts, open fingered gloves, mouth guard and jockstraps.

The UFC has eight weight classes ranging from Flyweight at 125lbs all the way to heavyweight which is capped at 265 lbs, including a women’s division at Bantamweight 135 lbs.Matches consist of three 5-minute rounds and five 5-minute rounds for the championship and main event bouts with a one minute break between rounds. Matches end when an opponent gets knocked out by strikes (KO); gets submitted through tapping, verbal submission or losing consciousness; gets technical knockout (TKO) due to referee stoppage, when he sees that a fighter is unable to intelligently defend himself or through a doctor’s stoppage, when the fighter has a severe injury or is losing too much blood; or by corner stoppage when the fighter is unable to continue and their team throws in a towel to prevent further injury. Furthermore, a fighter can win through judges decision. Three Judges score the round with the winner of each round getting 10 points and the loser getting 9 or less. Points are scored on aggression, octagon control and effective damage. If a stalemate is reached on the ground with neither fighter advancing their position, the referee can stand up and reset the fighters. Other possible outcomes include disqualification, a no contest due to an unintentional illegal move, or a draw by a judge’s decision.
