APA Don’ts
1. You should not use first person (I, me). Instead of saying, “I hypothesize that mindfulness differs by gender”, you should write “it is hypothesized that mindfulness differs by gender.
2. You should never use bullet points. All written information should be narrative. Including ethnicity breakdowns.
3. Don’t quote other people’s work. In MLA, it is common practice to quote others’ work verbatim, as long as we use quotation marks and cite accordingly. In APA, it is preferred that you would take the author’s sentence and apply to your paper using your own words.
4. Don’t use charts in the paper. According to APA, charts should only be included in the appendix section.
5. Don’t cite the author’s introduction (literature review). When you cite a paper’s literature review section, you’re basically citing work that they are citing from other studies. In other words, secondary or tertiary sources. Your introduction should be reporting the findings and methodology of that particular study. This information can be found in the Method and Results section of the APA paper.
