Hedda Gabler

In the play Hedda Gabler is a tragedy based on selfishness, ignorance, and greed. One relevant example taken from the play and is pertinent to modern society is how people only care and think about their wants and needs in life. Hedda was rude to everyone, maliciously hid important work from her husband’s competition, Ejlert Lövborg and even handed him a gun so that he could commit suicide, to which she then tells him to have a beautiful death. This mirrors actions that occur in this day and age, for example, some people only get married to another for financial security or position within society. typically, when this type of arrangement happens, feelings are not reciprocated towards one another and is usually one sided. In the play, Hedda and Jürgen had a six-month honeymoon but after all that she didn’t feel anything for him, just emotionless; in the marriage for all the wrong reasons.

More often than not, as in Hedda Gabler, one partner will confide in others as soon as their partner is away from them and will often have infidelity in their relationship. On the other hand, Hedda is pregnant which can affect her emotions and some of this “selfishness” can be attributed to thinking about what’s best for her child but be misconstrued as being selfish.

Another relevancy between the play and the real world is the concept of rivalries. Jürgen Tesman and Ejlert Lövborg were aiming for the position within the University. This position was one of the sole reasons Hedda decided to marry Jürgen. In today’s job market, competition for most jobs are fierce and candidates will usually try to use whatever leverage they can at their disposal.

Hedda gives a tale of the original desperate housewife, and Eva Longoria Parker has nothing to do with the lady. Once the best catch in town is a lady limited by Victorian ideals and stuck with a dull, boring man in a loveless marriage. Her only consolation is to manipulate others, which happens in about 94 percent of the play. It might have been that Norway was not ready for a leading woman of the female Fatale variety because, in the early 1890s, Hedda received negative reviews. Hedda has remained to be about talked about fiction women. Hedda is a cruel but entertaining story. Sex has a lot to do with It and connects the story with what happens in the modern world (Ibsen, 1961).

In today’s world, some women tend to use what they have to get what they want. The story helps us understand the position of women in the world today. Just like in the story, some women influence others using their sexuality and good looks. Some women in today’s society think that they cannot seek through careers and scholarships and believe that they can only seek it by controlling others. Hedda symbolizes how women seek power by controlling others through sexuality. Women seem to be sexually vulnerable just by their physical nature. Hedda solves her issues by screwing with other people. In society today, there are those women who solve their issues just by having sex with other people. In Hedda Gabler, Ibsen brings us a typical tragedy of human life in the odd, delicate, and greedy heroine; he can introduce one of the most beautiful and subtle ideas in all the dramatic literature.
