Love is central to human life. Without it, society would be radically different. Normal family relationships are begun and nurtured through the expression of love, and every charitable organization and conservation group strives to better the existence of others out of compassion. Even the awful chapters of human history are full of love: tyrannical dictators love power and sell their conscience in its pursuit, and countless stories of loving sacrifice arise from the victims of tragedy. Clearly, the concept of love is intrinsic to people. Margaret Atwood, in her novel Oryx and Crake, portrays a world in the relatively near future in which love is perverted to such an extent that true love and upright morals are nearly absent, yet still necessary. The novel seems to be realistic, and with a focus on genetic engineering, takes humanity’s current course of scientific development to its logical extreme, an extreme ending with the near total extinction of humanity. Both the end and the path that leads there raises the question of whether or not the advancement of science necessitates a departure from morals and compassion.
