BIG Idea:    “No educational process is complete until you can apply what you study. The need to write requires that you strengthen your understanding and

knowledge about a work of fiction.” (Roberts 1)

Your first essay of the semester will be a literary analysis essay which deals with one of the six works of fiction from our unit, Writing About Literature.  You will examine this work with an emphasis on one of the six literary foci as studied within your Expert and Home Groups: conflict character, point of view, setting, themes and ideas, symbolism and allegory, or tone.

Essay topics will be approved via student-teacher conferencing ONLY after you have fully outlined your ideas through brainstorming.  Your brainstorming MUST include 2 to 3 pieces of textual evidence and a working thesis statement.

READING:

• identify the most important ideas and supporting details in short fiction
• make and explain inferences about literature, supporting your explanations with well-chosen explicit and implicit ideas found within the story
• extend your understanding of a story by making rich and insightful connections between the ideas in them and the human condition

WRITING:

• explore and focus ideas for essay writing (brainstorming, thesis development and outlining)
• identify, sort, and order main ideas and supporting details for your essay
• establish a distinctive and original voice in your writing, modifying language and tone skillfully and effectively to suit the form, audience, and purpose for writing
• write complete sentences that communicate your meaning clearly and effectively, skillfully varying sentence type, structure, and length to suit different purposes and making smooth and logical transitions between ideas
• use proper conventions of writing to share your ideas (spelling, punctuation, and grammar)
• revise drafts to improve the content, organization, clarity, and style of their written work
• produce revised drafts written to meet criteria of a Grade 12 University level essay
