In this first part of the assignment you are going to plan an article that you will be writing later on in the course. Make sure to consult this plan every time you work on your article.
Subject
Decide which subject you want for your article. Make sure to make it a narrow subject and write down what you hope to achieve with your article. The subject must be related to an English-speaking country. Explicitly state how your subject relates to the culture, politics or society of an English-speaking country. The subject must have some basis in facts and cannot be a fiction piece.
Give a brief description of your subject in the box below. Make this part at least 100 words but not more than 150 words.
How to pick a subject
This assignment allows you quite a lot of freedom in picking your subject. The subject can be lighthearted or of a more serious nature but it is important that you find the right publication for it.
Think about your own interests and fascinations with English-speaking cultures and pick something that you feel would be relevant to you. Try to challenge yourself by picking something that you do not already know.
Keep in mind that the main focus of the article should be on the cultural aspect of your subject. For example: obesity is a medical issue, but there are cultural factors that make obesity a big problem in the US which can be examined and discussed. Another example could be American football; writing an article about the cultural phenomenon of the Super Bowl would be OK, but writing an article about the rules of American football would not be OK.
Newspaper/Magazine
Choose a newspaper/magazine from the list in which your article is going to be published. You can browse the magazines on Readly and sign up for a two week free trial if you have not already tested this site: https://gb.readly.com/accounts/sign_up. You can also visit a magazine’s web-page, they almost always publish some material online.

How to pick a newspaper/magazine
Go back to your choice of subject. What type of article are you planning to write?
Is it a news piece? Pick a newspaper and think about your angle. If you have chosen an angle that might be leaning in a certain direction politically choose a matching newspaper.
Is it a science article or popular science article? Look at both publications specifically talking about your subject as well as more general publications and decide what suits your subject. Note that it might be very hard to write a science article and that you should aim for a popular science article.
Is it a more light-hearted piece? Make sure to pick a publication that normally features your style of article. Remember that you still must have backing for your claims in the form of sources; you will need sources and extensive source criticism.
List your chosen publication in the box below.
Sources
List at least 3 sources that you plan to use and make a short source criticism of each of the listed sources. Note that the sources must be written in English.
Emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of your sources in relation to the article you plan to write.
Make note of bias, but remember that finding bias does not necessarily mean that the source cannot be used — it is, however, something to be aware of. If you use a source that you find to have questionable reliability make sure to make the reader aware in your source criticism.
For facts like statistics you should try to find information that is a first hand source and if this is not possible, a source as close to the information as possible.
Here is a webpage which you can use if you wish to understand more about sources in an academic setting: http://kildekompasset.no/source-evaluation.aspx. This assignment might not quite require the level of consideration described here but to understand the subject at depth you can go through the different articles you find starting here.
List your sources below in the box below. List one source followed by its criticism and then the second source and its criticism and so on. The sources listed here will need to be transferred to your final product when you have finished your article.
That’s the discribstion and that’s why I’m gonna have to use the same writer later on.
