Yes, lots of that paper’s material can be reused in this paper, but the result should not read like a smaller paper with more stuff added on.  Likely, you need to rethink your introduction; very likely you will need a new conclusion.

What will be the most changed: Your title.  A two-tiered title will be required, but this time, both parts are up to you!  Even if your final version remains largely involved with your endangered species, you’ll want to go beyond using just the animal’s name as one of those two title parts.
