On the Meno
After two failed attempts at defining virtue, Meno comes to a moment of aporia. He gets upset and accuses Socrates of being a stingray and a sorcerer. What do these accusations mean and, despite being colorful, are they fair? Again, how does Meno’s response reflect his character?
Explain Socrates’ definition of the tyrant. Is this a good definition? Do we find examples that fit this description amongst the unethical leaders of today? (Please be respectful of each other’s political differences. Be thankful that we have a space to learn even from those we disagree with.)
OPTIONAL: Why does Socrates leave Meno with such an unsatisfying conclusion about virtue? Does Socrates really believe in this definition, or has he decided that Meno has hit his limit? Do you think Socrates would leave things here with a more able interlocutor?
On the Republic
Are the people in the cave truly analogous to the citizens of today? Do they, by and large, take their bondage to be normal and misinterpret the possibilities of freedom as the opposite, oppression?
