Creative writing assignment

For this assignment, you’re invited to write a short story
of 500-750 words in which you demonstrate your awareness and control of at
least one literary technique. There should be a balance between exposition
(telling) and scene (showing) in your story. You can look to the samples of
flash fiction that I gave you for inspiration. Here are a few other ideas:

1. Have you had an experience where you had to
   completely rethink your assumptions about a person on event? Write a clear
   short story, using adequate description, characterization and dialogue that
   shows this change in perspective. Resist the urge to explain or moralize. Let
   the situation speak for itself.
2. Write about a person that you love/hate without
   telling the reader that you love/hate that person. Can you effectively
   communicate that love/hatred in your use of metaphor and simile? Since this is
   a story, you should still have some kind of arch (no matter how small).
3. Describe the day you were born, using sensory
   imagery and detail. Obviously, you will be imagining this since you don’t
   really know about the day you were born.
4. Write two short stories about the same event
   from two different points of view. The reader’s perspective should alter in
   some way through these two retellings. (Again, you can be subtle, but there
   should be something there.)
5. Use a description of setting to reflect a change
   in character’s mood. (You can intersperse the description of setting with the
   character’s own thoughts about an unrelated event.)
6. Come up with your own idea, just be aware of
   what you’re doing to achieve your effect.
