Information System Development Methodologies
System development is the process of building software (set of instructions) that helps the users gain access to information and results as they interact with the system. The software that serves users with information is developed using a number of approaches, termed as methodologies. Developers look at different factors to come up with the best methodology from among the many available. This is not because anyone method is bad but because the system in need may require specific adjustments that are only possible with a given methodology or methodologies may be due to differences in blueprint construction, implementation as well as execution options.

From the paper, I learnt that there are eight approaches to system development. Four of these are those that are already fully developed and have been used for some time, with their strengths and faults fully known and well documented. The other four are the one’s egression process. The established system development approaches are more rigid and conform to rather known blueprints. The first of these is the information modeling method. This is an approach that shows how information or more specific data is altered in the database. Much of information modeling activities are database field based. The second one is the decision support systems development methodology. The third is Socio-technical and the last one among the traditional methodologies is the Infological methodology. These methodologies were developed and used during the times systems were required. Each suited a particular time and place. However, they have a number of similarities. They both work well with database fields and their codes are more of fixed. They allow minimum alterations if any to their functional areas. Recording and maintaining information is critical in both cases.
The other category is that of the emerging approaches to system development. The first among these is the Interactionst methodology. This methodology does not make it possible to derive any summaries as it does not address the needs of information. The second one is the Speech Act -Based methodology. It is based on the linguistic preference of the system in need. Third is the soft systems approach which is both inter-subjective and objective in nature. The last in the list is the Trade Unionist methodology. This does not clearly clarify the information requirements but is more concerned with the functionality of the whole system. A prototype is of more concern in the Trade Unionist approach than information requirements.
What is interesting about the paper?
What makes this paper more interesting is the fact that the approaches are so different yet so similar. These methodologies are developed as a result of need for given qualities not found in the previous ones. This evolutionary nature of the methodologies makes them borrow many features from among themselves. However, their cost and implementation requirements are usually different. Clearly, system development methodology is key to coming up with the required system.
What questions are raised by the paper in terms of ISD theory /and or practice
Many questions come up. For instance, what are the advantages of a systems development methodology? Many advantages are seen when software us developed systematically. For example, these methodologies are maintainable. They can be used another time when they could be required. They bring inconsistency across all the projects that the system is implemented and they improve the quality and measure of utility gained from their use. Other questions include what are the objectives of system development methodologies? What is the best methodology among all the ones described by the paper? And which methodology is more acceptable to users?
Conclusion
Adoption of a system development approach is key to coming up with an elaborate and desirable system. The methodology blueprint once written down can be used at another later time to develop the same system the same way. The traditional approaches and the modern ones can be intertwined to produce exclusive systems, usable across many platforms. The objectives and subjects to the systems needed are well documented when all the.
